NEWPORT BASEBALL CLUB
Est. 1928

Newport Baseball Club was established in 1928 and is a Division 1 club rich in history of great players, characters and impressive results achieved over many years, as well as many individual player achievements at all age groups in various representative sides.

Newport
places a strong emphasis on all levels and age groups and focuses heavily on being a family oriented club with a strong Code of Conduct  focussed on fair, respectful and enjoyable participation by all.  The RAMS have always enjoyed a strong Junior program which is the foundation of any great club, many current senior players started at Newport as Junior RAMS.

The 2009/10 season proved to be a consolidating season in Division 1, with a very young average age in our senior playing group one thing is certain, the future looks bright at a senior level for quite some time to come.  At a junior level the past season saw Newport field 7 junior sides from U12s to U18s with a total of 78 junior players, as well as our first year running the RALLY-CAP program for kids from 5-9 year old which was a great success with many budding champions taking the field.  It was great to be around the club and see so many boys and girls of all ages having a great time playing the game of baseball.  The focus for the future is to further promote the game of baseball throughout the area with the aim of of having 100 junior players at our great club.

During the 2010 Winter The RAMS fielded U12, U14 & U17 sides in the Geelong Baseball Association.  The Winter has also seen extensive upgrades around the RAM-DOME on all grounds, spectator areas and other outdoor areas.  Substantial upgrades to numerous areas inside the rooms has also recently commenced.

There are always many challenges ahead for the RAMS but with a renewed unity between the senior and junior entities of the club the future certainly looks bright at the RAM-DOME as training has begun for the 2010/11 Summer Season with Darren Malthouse taking on the challenge as Club Coach.

So whether you are a current member, previous member or potential new member come down to the  RAM-DOME and take the field or just enjoy being part of our great club.

Bob Milne's 75th Year RAMS All-Star Team

RAMS GET A NEW FIGHTING FLAG

All who know Newport, know Bob Milne our oldest Life Member at 83 years old who was named Life Member in 1958.

Late in 2009 Bob who hates to miss any games of his beloved RAMS, decided that we needed a club flag.  Bob donated the funds and had a flag produced so it could be flown high whenever a RAMS team of any age is playing at home.  Bob has a great memory of the history of the Newport baseball Club and hopes that the flag will become part of the RAMS tradition for the future.

Bob watches on as Roland Stott and Dave Malthouse raise the RAMS flag for the 1st time

RAMS HISTORY CONTINUES INTO THE FUTURE

As the saying goes the more things change the more things stay the same.  Our resident artist Tony Bramwell has been busy during the off season painting new signs to grace the main and outer diamond at the RAM-DOME.

The main diamond at Newport has been called the "Harry Douglas Field" for a lot longer than I have ever known.  Much the same as the outer diamond has always been known as the "L. R. 'Bob' Milne Field".  After nearly 30 years on the fence it was time both signs got a freshen up and it was great that Bob was at the Werribee v Newport practice match to have the photo taken before the sign gets hung.

Bob Milne is 82 now is Newport's longest serving life member as he ticks off his 51st year this year.  Bob was a true legend in his playing day predominantly as a catcher and had it not been for a career ending knee injury would have played on for many more years.  Bob always had and still very much has a great baseball brain and spent many years with various coaches at Newport working statistics and strategies.  There would not be to many Newport players over the last 25 years that have not had the benefit of Bob's knowledge and wisdom.  He is a regular at the club and does not like missing a game, he is a true living legend of the club.

Harry Douglas is another name that will always live in the history of legends of the Newport Baseball Club, Harry was a demon on the mound and I am reliably told that he turned down the opportunity to venture to the U.S. with his pitching skills as he wanted to stay with the RAMSI am proud to be able to tell my sons it was Harry who taught me how to throw a curve ball.  Bob often has a lot to say about the glory days of when he was catching and Harry was pitching.  Sadly Harry is no longer with us but one things for sure the main diamond at Newport will be known as the "Harry Douglas Field" for many many years to come.
