Masters Report – Round 14 – 1st
March 2010: Correspondent: “Need for Speed”
The Rams Masters finished their 2009-2010 campaign
last night with a good 11-4 away win against Waverley. Unfortunately,
Williamstown got home against Werribee and Mulgrave beat Sandringham to
keep us out of the finals by half a game.
The Rams started slowly with a 3 up and down in the
first, but managed to do the same to Waverley thanks to a double play
turned by Stevie and Macca. We notched up one run in the second but gave
away two in the bottom of the innings with a wild throw trying for a
second double play.
After another 3 up and down 3rd dig, we
started to bat in the 4th Innings with 5 hits in 6 batters
bringing home 3 runs. AB didn’t have to throw too many pitches in the 3rd
and 4th as Waverley were hitting everything but they were
being swallowed up by the Outfield of Dando, Brando and Cass – Dando
topping off a 2nd out Fly with a pin-point throw to first for
a 7-3 double play.
Brando relieved AB on the mound, and both sides
were again scoreless in the 5th, however the RAMS blew the
game apart in the top of the 6th with 4 Hits, 2 Walks and a
couple of errors enabling us to score the maximum 7 runs. Waverley
grabbed 4 hits in the last to post 2 consolation runs, but the game was
all over.
The RAMS grabbed 12 Hits and 2 Walks to Waverley’s
10 Hits. Macca grabbed another 3, 2 to Young Gavin and AB, with singles
to Benchwarmer Jordy, Dando, Brando, Big Lewis and Griffo. Brando
managed 3 RBI’s, 2 going to AB, and singles to Jordy, Macca, Young
Gavin, Dando, Griffo and Mama Cass (for letting yet another pass ball go
through.)
Another very enjoyable season has come to an end,
and us Oldies will now bide our time waiting for next year’s pre-season
training which will start, as usual, 5 days before our first game.

Masters Report – Round 13 – 22nd February
2010: Correspondent: “Need for Speed”
The Rams Masters kept their slim Finals
chances alive with a 13-2 win over Bonbeach on Monday night. We will now
need to beat Waverley next week and have one of either Mulgrave or
Williamstown to lose their match next week to make the finals.
The RAMS batted first and as usual came out with
all guns blazing. 5 Hits and a walk in the first dig gave us a great 5
run start. Newport began with AB on the mound, and after two very large
hits to start the game, the next three batters grounded out to Combo at
shortstop and we stopped Bonbeach at 2 Runs.
Another 5 runs in the next 3 Innings had the RAMS
10-2 in front due mainly to some good defensive infield work by Big Rick
and Combo on the Hot side of the diamond as well as Big Lewis at 1st
base who also snaffled one out of the dirt to turn an error into an out.
After adding another 3 in the 5th, Brando was called in the
relieve and retired the Bonbeach team in order.
The RAMS were much stronger in their offence
grabbing 11 hits and 8 walks as opposed to Bonbeach’s 5 hits and 1 walk.
Hits went to Macca (3), Cleary, Jordy and Mama Cass (2 each), and
singles to Young Gavan and the Lanky Yanky Lewis. Macca also managed 4
RBI’s, 3 going to Young Gavan, 2 to Combo and singles to Cleary, Jordy
Lewis and Mama Cass (for letting a pass ball go through.)
We really can’t go pass Macca for the MVP this
week, and AB takes the Spit the Dummy award after being hit by a pitcher
for the 5th time this year. (Must be too big a target) !

Masters lost
to Geelong 8 - 15
The Rams Masters went down to top side Geelong on
Monday night 15-8, and are now only a mathematical chance of making the
finals.
The RAMS tried AB, Combo and Brando on the mound,
however Geelong were a batting machine and knocked up 16 hits and
grabbed 5 walks, 6 of their hits being extra bases. The Rams tried hard
to match them and got 11 hits of their own but only milked 1 walk.
The RAMS grabbed 7 hits in the first Innings and
scored 6 Runs, but in the next 4 managed only 1, 0, 0 and 1. Geelong, on
the other hand steadied after a 3 up and down first innings and scored
3, 3, 6 and 3 to take control of the game.
Hits went to Combo (3), Big Rick (2), and singles
to Cleary, Macca, Brando, Lewis, Griffo and Cass, whilst Big Rick,
Brando, and Cass grabbed 2 RBI’s each with singles to Dando and Griffo.
Big Rick gets the MVP this week for 2 Hits and 2
RBI’s and takes away the Meal courtesy of the Williamstown RSL,
whilst we’ll give an OOPS award to Big Lewis for getting to the ground
balls at 1st base, but then having his glove spit them out.

The Rams Masters grabbed a much needed win against
Melbourne last night. With only 3 rounds to go, Geelong is clear on top,
but there is a logjam for the other 3 places in the finals.
The Old RAMS batted first and were held scoreless
by Melbourne’s wiley veteran Clappy. Newport started their version of
Clappy on the mound – AB, and Melbourne were also held scoreless in
their first dig.
The Rams came to life in the second with 4 hits in
a row and scoring 3 runs. Melbourne also grabbed 3 hits and a walk from
AB, and combined with the efforts of the “Muffed Fly” brothers – Brando
and Young Gavin, scored 4 runs to be ahead by 1. The Rams then added one
run in each of the 3rd and 4th Innings due to HUGE
Home Runs by Macca and Brando, whilst Combo relieved AB on the mound and
shut Melbourne down for 3 Innings, and the rams were now in front by 1.
The Old Rams with their noses in front then scored
7 in the top of the 6th from 6 Hits and 2 walks to have an
unassailable lead. Melbourne then scored two consolation runs in the
last before Combo shut them down with 2 K’s and a 1-3.
Apart from the two early Muffed Flys, the Old Rams
fielding was great. Macca stopped and threw out everything at 3rd
base, and we turned over 2 double plays. Special mention goes to
President Stott who couldn’t find his feet after fielding a ball at
shortstop and stumbled his way into the middle of the diamond finishing
with a tumbleroll and no out! – Degree of Difficulty – 3.5 !!
We managed 14 Hits and 5 Walks against Melbourne’s
11 and 2. Brando grabbed 3 Hits, 2 each to Macca, Young Gavin, Stotty
and Mama Cass, and singles to Steve Cleary, AB and Big Rick. 4 RBI’s
were scored by Stotty with singles to Steve Cleary, Macca, Young Gavin,
Brando, AB, Big Rick, Mama Cass and Colin Rich.
Stotty gets both the MVP and the OOPS award for his
batting and fielding efforts respectively, whilst The Meal Winner for
this week courtesy of the Williamstown RSL, is Brando for his 3
hits from 3, eclipsing his 2 double plays from last week.

Masters lost
to Mulgrave 10 - 13
Mulgrave jumped onto AB from the start with 4 hits
in the first innings and scored 3 runs. However, the rams went one
better in the bottom of the first and scored 4 runs from 4 hits and a
walk. The Mulgrave batters were shut down in the next two digs, helped
by a double play from Macca and Steve Cleary, whilst the Rams added
another one to lead by two after 3.
The 4th Innings was a disaster with
Mulgave jumping all over AB getting 7 hits including a Regulation
grounder to Macca at 3rd base who managed to trip over his
shoelaces and faceplanted the ground instead of throwing the ball! 7
Runs came home and we were down 10 to 5. The rams grabbed another 3 in
the bottom of the 4th with 3 walks and a good hit by Young
Gavin, however, with loaded bags and none out in the bottom of the 5th,
we failed to score.
Mulgrave continued to hit the ball in the 6th,
this time getting 3 hits off Brando, scoring another 3 runs, meaning
that the Rams needed to score 5 in the last to draw. Good hits to Jordy
and Macca enabled us to get only another 2, and the game was lost
13-10.
We managed 11 Hits and 7 Walks against Mulgrave’s
15 Hits and 0 Walks, however left too many baserunners on the bases and
double plays twice killed promising Innings. Macca grabbed 3 Hits with
Wheels Cleary, Big Rick and Jordy managing 2 each, with singles to Mama
Cass and Young Gavin. 2 RBI’s were scored by Mama Cass, Young Gavin and
Macca, with singles to Big Rick, Slamming Sammy, Cricketer Colin and
AB.
We have an OOPS award this week going to Brando,
who has taken over from Stotty as a specialist Double Play batter,
whilst The Meal Winner for this week courtesy of the Williamstown RSL,
is Peter McNish for his 3 Hits, 2 RBI’s and the Comical Face Plant at 3rd
base.

from BV
With a distinctly favourable
wind for both clubs at the
graveyard, Bonbeach recorded its
fourth won of the season - and
potentially one of its most
important as it remains in a
three-way go at the bottom of
the table.
It took until the tenth innings,
though, with the Jays breaking a
6-6 deadlock with three in the
top of that innings against a
side making an characteristic
series of errors over the course
of the game.
“The wind was a factor,” said
Newport Manager Darren
Malthouse. “But it was fluky –
howling out and then howling in.
A difficult day for baseball,
but it was a really competitive
game and Bonbeach was probably
just more desperate than us.”
“We lost three runners on base
when it mattered most – that
especially came back to hurt us
when they scored three in the
top of the tenth.”
Boasting one of the better
percentages in the league,
Newport has built much of its
game around a solid defence –
although it was not quite at
full strength for this game.
“We made a lot of errors,”
Malthouse said. “One error at
shortstop cost us three runs and
our outfield defence hasn’t been
as good as it should be.”
Both sides picked up a surfeit
of hits, with Troy Malthouse
collecting four for the Rams and
Ben Donald smacking a double
that scored three runs for the
Jays in the fourth.
“Bonbeach swung the bats very
well,” Malthouse said. “They
took better advantage of their
opportunities and definitely
made us pay for our mistakes.”
Griffin Weir went five solid
innings for Newport and Stephen
Pengelly finished out the game,
while the Jays went with Matthew
Prior (eight innings) and Mitch
Sheldon-Collins at the end.
While is was a much-needed win
for the Blue Jays, Newport is
still strong in seventh placing
despite one of its more
disappointing outings of the
season.
“Our problem is our
consistency,” Malthouse said.
“This is the most runs we’ve had
scored against us in any game
this year.”
The Rams’ next game is away to
Geelong on Saturday, while
Bonbeach is away to Malvern on
Thursday (6.00 PM) before
hosting Doncaster on Saturday.

The Rams Masters have started the new year with a
trek out to Berwick to win 10-7.
The Rams showed no ill effects from the Christmas
Break and put runners on base and scored in each of the 5 Innings. New
Lead-off, Mama Cass showing the way with 3 Hits, Big Rick grabbed 2, and
singles to Jordy, Brando, Dando, Lewis the LankyYank, and Col. Scoring
RBI’s were Cass (3), Col (2), Big Rick (2), and singles to Bigger Lewis,
Wheels Cleary, and Brando.
As Combo wasn’t around, AB started himself on the
mound and was made to look good by some outstanding fielding. Great
Outfield Flys were taken by Dando and Big Rick, whilst Griffo picked up
and threw out everything that came anywhere near him at 3rd
base, including 2 diving efforts that resulted in outs, and another
pickup that resulted in a “5 to 2 to 6 to 1” run down play on the 3rd
base line.
The MVP
award this week goes to Mama Cass for 3 Hits and 3 RBI’s, however, the
Meal Winner for this week courtesy of the Williamstown RSL, is
Griffo, who performed a Fielding Clinic at 3rd base that left
all of the watching youngsters in awe.

Masters Report – Round 8 – 21st December 2009:
Correspondent: “Need for Speed”
The Rams Masters have finished on a roll going into
the Xmas break managing a 2nd Win in a row against Upwey
Ferntree Gully at the Ramdome: The Final score being 10-4.
A big crowd was expected for the Xmas break-up game
and we weren’t disappointed. Mrs Pengelly, Mrs Young, The ledge, Kelvin
and his dog were soon doing the Mexican wave as the Rams piled on 7 runs
in the second to blow the game apart.
The Rams piled on 19 Hits and a walk against
Upwey’s 8 Hits and 2 Walks to be totally in charge of the game. Brando
and Combo smashed 3 hits each, Jordy, Macca, Mama Cass, Sammy, and our
new USA Recruit Lewis, grabbed 2 each and Gav, Dando, and Big Rick
grabbed one each. RBI’s went to Brando, Sammy and Gav (2 each), and
singles to Macca, Combo, Rolly and Big Rick.
Combo finally started on the mound (some would say
so he couldn’t relieve) and Macca relieved. Not many Errors this week
meant the pitchers were always in control and the defence only allowed 4
scattered runs. Highlight of the fielding was Sammy’s twisting, turning
effort at a pop fly at 2nd Base (Yes I said 2nd
Base!) where at the last minute with his eyes closed, he managed to
stick his glove out – and yep – missed the ball completely.
The MVP award this week goes to Brando for 3 Hits
and 2 RBI’s, whilst the OOPS award and the Meal Winner for this week
courtesy of the Williamstown RSL, is Sammy Galafaro, for being
able to sneak into 2nd base while Combo was distracted and
entertain us with his Pop Fly effort.

Masters Report – Round 7 – 14th December 2009:
Correspondent: “Need for Speed”
The Rams Masters secured a much needed win against
Fitzroy last night 12-11 at the Ramdome.
Details are a bit sketchy as our roving reporter
missed the game, and these guys are a little elderly and really can’t be
expected to remember what happened a couple of hours beforehand !!
The Rookie Brian Anderson got another start on the
mound and got through his 4 Innings, conceding 8 runs. The rams batters,
however, were also bludgeoning the ball to all parts of the field and
had 11 runs on the board, (4 of them in the 4th Inning).
Our “Recidivist Reliever” Combo came in to throw
the last two and whilst we added another run in the fifth, Dando was
doing all he could at Right Field to snatch defeat from the jaws of
victory. 3 runs to Fitzroy made it a very tight 12-11 game, but the rams
were able to keep Fitzroy scoreless in the 6th to hold on to
the win.
We think that the following players got hits –
Jordy 4, Combo 3, Bando 2, and at least one each to Macca, Griffo, Big
Rick, Dando and Mama Cass. Special mention goes to Colin Rich for the
Ugliest swing of the year so far.
The “Oops” award is shared between Col and Dando
this week as mentioned above, whilst the MVP and the Meal Winner for
this week courtesy of the Williamstown RSL, is Combo, who got 3
hits and managed not to lose the game when he came on to pitch, despite
Dando’s efforts.
Newport v Cheltenham 13/12/2009
1sts lost
1 - 3 from Baseball Victoria's web site....
The Rustlers continued their strong
recent form with a hard-fought result
over the Rams, who showed that they can
match it with the league offensive
powers but found it hard going against
Blake Cunningham and Kable Hogben at the
end.
“It was a lack-lustre game from our
point of view,” said Newport Manager
Darren Malthouse. “We just couldn’t get
anything happening.”
With scores level at 1-1, the game was
still up for grabs into the eighth, when
Paul Rutgers sparked a two-run innings
that set it up for a Cheltenham win.
“They probably shouldn’t have scored in
that innings,” said Malthouse. “But we
should not have been in that position.
We had a heap of chances but just didn’t
hit when it mattered.”
“We had a runner at second – with out –
late in the game, but Matthew Gourlay
turned a great double play that set us
back,” he said. “Chris Bramwell hit a
double early on and we left him out
there.”
Bramwell, incidentally, is back for the
rest of the season – which is great news
for Rams supporters.
With only a handful of runs scored, it
was a contest clearly dominated by the
pitchers. Cunningham went eight for the
Rustlers and Hogben finished the job,
while import Kyle Moore spun seven
innings or work before giving way for
Matthew Lawman.
“Cunningham threw a really good game for
them,” Malthouse said.
“I thought our bloke was great, too.
They are a powerful hitting side and he
really minimized the damage.”
Moore has proven his versatility and his
serious worth to the Newport club this
season.
“He has given us excellent service,”
Malthouse said. “He’s really put in
around the club, is a great player and
just a nice guy.”
Now sixth (at nine and seven),
Cheltenham is at home to Bonbeach on
Thursday (6.00 pm start) before wrapping
up 2009 by hosting Malvern on Sunday,
while Newport (six and ten) is at home
to Sunshine on Thursday, followed by a
return clash with the Eagles at Altona
on Sunday.

Masters Report – Round 6 – 7th
December 2009: Correspondent: “Need for Speed”
The Rams Masters after coming off One win in a row (a forfeit
against Williamstown) were back at home to Werribee last night and were
beaten 14-6.
The Rookie Brian Anderson started on the mound and
got through 2 Innings. RBI’s from Jordy, Rookie Ando, and AB had the
score at 3 all after 2 and it looked like anybody’s game. A walk and a
couple of good hits in the third forced Combo to bring in Ace Reliever
AB. AB got through the Innings but not before Werribee had posted
another 3 runs. The Rams grabbed another 2 in the bottom of the third
through hits to Combo and Sammy, to be only one down.
AB got through the next two Innings giving up only
one run, thanks greatly to a running flyball from evergreen Mama Cass at
centrefield, whilst the rams also grabbed another one courtesy of a
Steve Cleary hit to still be one down going into the last.
The Werribee Batters found their range in the last,
and after AB gave up a walk and two hits, Combo came in to finish off
the Innings, but was met with another 3 Hits, and combined with a walk
and 3 Errors, Werribee piled on 7 runs to take an unassailable lead.
Clearly, the difference between the two sides were
the Hits. The Rams were outhit by Werribee 18 to 11. For the Rams,
Macca, Combo and Griffo grabbed 2 each, whilst singles went to Cleary,
Jordy, Sammy, Rick and a very dubious one to AB. (It pays to have a
relative scoring!).
MVP this week goes to Griffo, who was on fire with
the Bat. The “Oops” award and the Meal Winner for this week courtesy of
the Williamstown RSL, is
our Esteemed President Roland Stott who managed to hit into 2 double
plays. (And has been “made” Unavailable for next week).

lost to Sandringham 8 - 11 (Match Report by “Need for

The Rams Masters were away to Sandringham last
night and again whilst being competitive just made too many Errors in
the field to finish with an 11-8 loss. AB, Combo and Griffo shared the
pitching duties for the Rams giving up 8 hits, 2 walks and getting 1 K.
Unfortunately, the defensive work in the field was a little poor, and we
made at least 7 Errors. (We think there were others but we started to
lose count). This enabled Sandringham to score 11 runs – 7 of them in a
disastrous third Inning where we managed to make 5 errors and only 2
outs.
The Rams offence also managed 8 hits but also drew
6 walks. The difference being that the Sandringham defence only made a
couple of errors. Hits were scored by Jordy, Macca Combo, Rookie Ando,
Cass, Colin Rich, Constable Ando and Griffo. Cass and Colin Rich managed
2 RBI’s, with Macca, Combo, Sammy and AB getting 1 each.
MVP is hard to pick this week but with 2 RBI’s, a
hit and a walk in his comeback game, we’ll give it to Colin Rich
(despite the muffed fly). There were many nominations for the “Oops”
award, however, AB’s magnificent watching of a curve ball over the
middle of the plate for a third strike in a critical situation wins by a
nose.

The Rams were well in the game at two
apiece after four. Essendon kicked away
to a three-run lead in the sixth before
Newport came back with a couple of their
own in a game that featured quality
defence by both sides.
The Rams came out firing in the first,
with import Kyle Moore driving in two
runs off Essendon starter Kyle Bedford,
who settled into his work and finished
up spinning six innings with no further
scoring damage.
Although Essendon plated one in the
second and another to tie it up in the
fourth, they were distinctly unsettled
by Newport’s Chris Bramwell, whose
off-speed offerings, location and
changes in velocity held the Dons at
bay. A versatile and skilled player,
Bramwell is a key factor in the Newport
lineup, whether on the hill, catching or
hitting.
Essendon edged ahead in the fifth on a
single to Dean McIntyre and then scored
another two in the bottom of six –
compliments of a Davies triple and a
Rogers double.
But the visitors were not done,
rebounding in the seventh as Scot
Malthouse capped a terrific time at bat
by singling to score two off Essendon
reliever Gareth Formisano.
But the Bombers were up to the task as
Davies drove in an insurance run in the
eighth and closer Ross Hipke retired the
Newport side in the ninth.
“Newport are always hard to shake off,”
said Essendon Manager Russell Spear.
“They are real scrappers and it’s a
credit to them that they keep pushing
the teams above them.”
“Both clubs pitched well,” Spear said.
“Bramwell went the distance for them. I
thought Bedford was good for us and it
was Gareth’s first Sunday outing at this
level.”
“Our pitchers threw strikes.”
Josh Davies was a serious offensive
factor in what developed into a tight
contest, although the Bombers stranded
eleven runners on base to their
opponents’ five.
Davies picked up two hits and two RBIs,
Jarryd Rogers, Dean McIntyre and Aaron
Sayers all went two and one, while
Tristan McDonald chimed in with two
hits. For the Rams, Kyle Moore and
Jordan Young both hit safely twice,
whilst Scot Malthouse and Matthew Lawman
had two RBIS.

8 - 8 (Match Report by “Need for

The Rams Masters were at the
Baseball Centre in the early game on Monday night against Bonbeach and
snatched an 8 All Draw out of the jaws of defeat. Rolly Stott and AB
shared the pitching duties for the Rams giving up 16 hits, 2 walks and
getting 5 K’s. There were only two errors in the field this week, one
being a rare Catchers Interference by Combo. (Stotty must be slowing
down!!) Behind 8-3 and with 2 Out in the last Inning, AB started the
rally with a smash down the third base line. Big Rick then followed with
his second hit of the game, Stevie Cleary hit a too hard to handle pop
fly to Centrefield which was spilled, and then the big end of Macca,
Rolly and Combo all managed solid hits to score the 5 runs needed for
the draw. The Rams offence was outhit by Bonbeach, only managing 10 hits:
Macca, Combo and Big Rick getting 2 each and singles to Cleary, Rolly,
Sammy and AB. RBI’s went to Rolly (3), Combo (2) and 1 each to Macca,
and Big Rick. MVP this week goes to Rolly, especially for the large 2
bagger in the last, whilst the “Oops” award goes to Jordy for slipping
on the “substandard” infield at the Ball Park. Our “Unhappy Chappy” this
week has to be combo who stopped most of Rolly’s pitches with various

Mudders worked hard on the mound & with the bat
The Sheriff makes a trademark play at short
The RAMS lined up to take on the Royals in the 2nd time in 2 weeks
following a mid week encounter. The game was started with a
minutes silence to honor the loss of long time member, scorer and mother
of assistant coach Helen Blair from the Sandringham Baseball Club.
With Chris Bramwell back in the
side and taking the mound there was an air of confidence amongst the
RAMS players and supporters. However Sandringham got straight down
to business scoring 2 unanswered runs in the top of the 1st. The
RAMS continued to get hits and get on base but were unable to string a
few together to drive in some runs. Mudders did well on the hill
yet some good hitting by the Royals and some errant fielding by the RAMS
allowing Sandringham to get some momentum going.
Despite some good hitting the RAMS once again let themselves down
leaving 12 runners on base, which no team in Div 1 is going to let any
team get away with. Take nothing away from Sandringham, Grant
Irving pitched the full 9 without giving up a run, Jock Allen also
played well for the Royal getting 3 hits.
Cable Savage came in to relieve after
Mudders pitched well for 6, then Crag Malt closed out the 9th.
From a spectator point of view it was a good game of baseball to watch
(other than the result), the score was close, both teams were working
hard with the score close and the RAMS having their chances. But
the momentum always seemed to be flowing in Sandringham's way and the
RAMS were not able to get enough momentum back to turn the game. Darren Malthouse said: “We had our
first bad game for the season, We did leave a dozen runners on base, but
full credit to Irving for scattering eight hits over the whole game,
from memory, Sandy only had one earned run, but that was one more than
us. We just didn’t do anything right, we messed up a double
play early on and it seemed to go downhill from there. We always seem to
have trouble against Sandringham, but we’re still travelling along
alright.” 2nds def

The Sheriff on base after 1 of 3 hits
Jordy keeps his
season long hitting streak
alive with 2 more hits tonight
The RAMS ventured to the MBP for the 3rd time in 4
weeks to take on Upwey FTG in a game that all at the RAMS knew we must
win for numerous reasons; we need to get that winning feeling back, we
need to continue to get points for the overall season and to keep the
win/loss ratio in our favour. In what was an uncharacteristically
balmy night that had a few of us wearing shorts to a late game at the
stadium. The RAMS came with game faces on knowing we had every
reason to expect to win as long as we put hits together and don't
take the pressure off and capitalise on any opportunity.
The RAMS started with Scot on the mound with the only
other changes to the standard defensive line-up being Stevie P at 2nd,
Jordy went to left, and a welcome return to Liam Vicary-Lovegrove at
centre. With a shaky 1st dig the Tigers got one run. The
RAMS came to the plate ready to play, Jordy hit a high pop up behind 1st
that Upwey had trouble with and Jordy capitalised with some great base
running that saw him get to 3rd. From there on the RAMS
capitalised on opportunities and scored runners when they got on base.
The Sheriff had a night out taking 3 hits and putting in an impressive
performance at short. Jordy Young also batted well getting 2 hits.
Some other good hitting efforts were put in by Scot, Troy, Jono, Kyle
and Landy, as stated there was a lot of good team contact hitting that
advanced and scored runners. The RAMS also defended well and keep
things tight with some great
infield plays by all as well as some great fly balls caught in the
outfield.

Unfortunately
for the RAMS,
Waverley's bats were working from the get go, with Troy DP'ing we were
looking to shut them down early and get a lead....but, there is always a
but! To
Waverley's credit they started well with 6 quick runs in the first 2
digs, we needed to respond with the bat, but never really got going,
Cable Savage then greeted the mound and shut down Waverley's offense,
but again we couldn't capitalize with the bat and ended with a 9 to nil
defeat and only 3 hits for the day. Defensively we were very good,
offensively we struggled against pitching we all really should of been
able to get on top of. Something to work on mid week for us.

(Match Report by "Need for Speed")
The RAMS Masters were at the
Baseball Centre in the late game last night to last years runners-up
Geelong and came away with a 14-9 win. Dr Bruce
Boucher playing his annual Masters game for the season and Rolly Stott
shared the pitching duties for the RAMS
giving up 13 hits, 3 walks and getting 4 K’s. The Geelong score was
helped a little by AB and Mama Cass who both made numbskull errors at
first base. The RAMS offence,
however, put together 18 hits and 5 walks to blast in 14 Runs. Macca and
Griffo led the way with 3 hits each; AB, Dr Bruce, Combo and Sammy
managed 2 each; whilst Cleary, Cassell and Stotty grabbed 1 each.
3 RBI’s went to Combo and Cleary, 2 each to Griffo
and Ando, and 1 each to Dr Bruce, Macca and AB. MVP this week goes to Macca for both offensive and
defensive efforts, whilst the “Oops” award is shared by error makers AB
and Cass – They couldn’t be split!
Couldn’t find a “Spit the Dummy” this week,
although Wheels Cleary wasn’t too happy with “The Legend” for sending
him home from 2nd Base.

1sts def by Sandringham 5 - 4
(Match Report by Radio RAMS)

RAMS drop a close one to Sandringham Once
again the RAMS ventured to the MBP for a midweek game against
Sandringham. All of us who have been to MBP for an evening game
know to rug up and tonight was no exception. Steve Pengelly
started on the mound with the only other defensive change for the RAMS
was at right field with Griffin Weir stepping in for Jono Bramwell who
was unavailable. Steve started well with 3 up - 3 down in the
first, but the same was the case for the RAMS as Matt Blackmore was
throwing well for the Royals. The 2nd dig didn't start so well
with a walk and couple of hits loaded the bases, when a bunt was popped
up Stevie dived forward taking a great catch and then threw to 2nd to
complete the double play. Stevie then dug deep and
finished the inning with a big strike out. However the RAMS also
failed to score in the 3rd display a crashing hit by Blacky for a stand
up double.
The 3rd inning for Sandringham started with a wild
throw allowing the lead off on, the following 4 batters got outfield
hits and the Royals were on the board, after a long inning for the RAMS
they were down by 4. Craig Malt came in to relive Stevie to finish
out the 3rd with The Sheriff and Jordy combining for a great double
play. Another scoreless inning by the RAMS followed although Troy
Malthouse hit a trademark line drive down the 3rd base line for a stand
up double. Craig continued to hold Sandringham only allowing 1
further run for the game. The RAMS finally got some things
happening in a row and scored in the 4th after Kyle smashed a very deep
hit to left field that looked to be going over, it hit the fence on one
bounce which given the size of the MBP outfield was a very long ball.
Jezza who was in to run for Kyle got to third and then scored on a drop
third strike to Blacky and the RAMS were finally on the board in an
inning that bought yet another hit to Jordy Young who has hit in every
game so far. Craig sat the Royals down in a row
in the 5th and he had some good momentum and accuracy happening.
Unfortunately the RAMS were also shut down in order where the only thing
getting hit was the poor main umpire coping a bad bound where he would
prefer not to. After a couple of deep breaths we were good to go
again. Craig again went through the 6th with 3 up - 3 down.
The 6th dig was a bit kinder to the RAMS with some hard hit infield hits
by Matt Lawman, and Kyle. With 2nd & 3rd occupied Jordy young
headed for first after the 3rd strike was dropped, a wild throw by the
catcher saw 2 more runs to the RAMS bringing the score to 3-5, but still
with work to do. Craig continued to throw well and was well backed
up by the field behind him, he also showed he hasnt lost all his tricks
finishing the dig with a pick off at first. With
the midweek games being timed the RAMS headed into the bottom of the 7th
knowing that this would be their last at bat. With 2 out Troy got
his 2nd stand up double of the night, followed an infield hit by Lawman.
Troy then scored on a wild pitch bringing the game to 4-5 with Lawman on
2nd ready to tie the game up. Unfortunately it wasnt to be and in
all to familiar circumstances of last season the RAMS went down by one.
Credit though to Sandringham who played well and tight all game with
Blackmore throwing the whole game and some good hitting including a
crashing double by Brendan Horne. Angry
reinforced what is already known: "we cant afford to leave
runners on base, we did ok with the bat with 8 hits but leaving runners
on base and some fielding errors cost cost us the game."

Kyle & Landy take their cuts before the game
The Sheriff lays down a tag from short
Kyle solid behind the dish with Bob watching on
The Newport Doctor was blowing slowing in from centre
field which ensures that any hit in the air will normally hold up and
turn into a fly ball for the outfielders to swallow. The clouds
were lurking so it was always going to be a day where both teams would
have to work hard and make the most of every opportunity.
Scot took the mound throwing to Kyle and most of the
defensive line-up was consistent with previous weeks. The focus
was always going to be contact hitting and keeping the ball down.
Scot started well with 2 strike-outs in the first and then a hit and
error in the 2nd let the Baycats in. It wasn't long before the
game was going run for run and the game was shaping up to be a tight one
as was predicted.
The RAMS got a couple and stayed in touch as the game
moved forward with only ever 1 or 2 runs in it. 2 hits to Scot,
Kyle, Troy, Blacky and a single to Jordy. Matt Lawman did
everything right hitting the ball hard and low but unfortunately found a
Geelong glove on each occasion, so it certainly wasn't through lack of
trying. Some good fielding by all however a couple of costly
errors that never come at a good time gave away some missed
opportunities. Once again Kyle showed he knows exactly where 2nd
base is as one of the Baycats rolled the dice and was out by a foot.
Matt Ryan from the Baycats got all of one in the top of
the 4th and sent it clear over the right field fence in as big a hit
that has been seen at the RAM-DOME. Thankfully for the RAMS the
bases were empty, but take nothing away from what was a great hit of the
ball. The same goes for many other Geelong players they kept the
pressure up all day with good hitting and tight fielding.
Troy Malt kept the game alive as the RAMS were 2 runs
down in the bottom of the 7th when he hit one of his trademark line
drives down the 3rd base line which scored 2 to draw the score at 4 a
piece which continued into extra innings. Landy
had come in to relieve Scot in the 7th and did well mixing the ball up
and did well getting a few strike outs, he is certainly no slouch on the
mound when given the chance and is not to be underestimated and will
continue to be an asset to the pitching staff of the RAMS.
As the game went into the 10th the Baycats came out with
bats firing with a lead off triple by Elliot Biddle and the hitting
continued with Geelong scoring 3 in the top of the 10th leaving the work
for the RAMS to do. Unfortunately the RAMS couldn't deliver and
the game finished after 10 digs with the Baycats ahead by 3.
When addressing the players after the game Angry
reinforced the importance of how much the small things matter and how
costly any error can be. Having said that the self belief amongst
the players is still high and as Bob Milne said: players learn more from
a loss in a game in extra innings than winning by 10, not that we want
to lose of course. (I have cleaned that up from how Bob put it
in his own special way :-)
So we are off to the MBP to take on Sandringham
Thursday night and get the game faces firmly on!!!!

Leitchy working hard as always on the hill
Mr Versatile, Craig Malthouse at 1st
After two very good
performances to start the season the Rams twos just didn’t have the game
to beat Geelong on Sunday. The Baycats team were keen to get themselves
on the winners podium and it showed as they smashed the ball all over
the park. Having scored 16 runs in the first two weeks we knew we could
hit the ball and amass a good score, however this week, those hits went
straight down the throats of our opponents. Given that we played at
home, you would think we would hit the ball better there. However we
continued to hit the ball in the air all day giving Geelong easy outs.
Defensively we were
again fairly solid, a couple of errors gave up some runs, and not the
greatest day on the hill for Leitchy who is one of the hardest working
pitchers, made life hard. We will move on though and as discussed after
the game, this is just one game for the season, next week against
Waverley we have a chance for redemption.

Newport v Bonbeach 11 October 2009 @ Bonbeach
1sts def Bonbeach 8-7
(Match Report by Radio RAMS)
The RAMS made the journey to Bonbeach after two convincing wins
but under no illusion that they were in for an easy day as the
RAMS were
beaten twice by Bonbeach twice last year. But with confidence
going well the attitude was certainly a positive one.
Once again the RAMS started the game in a way that was
lacking last year and that is scoring in the first. Some good
hitting by Scot, Matt and Kyle, as well as capitalising on an errant
throw saw the RAMS off and running with 2 on the board after the first.
Not a large change to the line-up other than Jono Bramwell coming in to
play right field and Jordy Young back to 2nd base. Scot took the
mound and the lead off for Bonbeach got on via a walk, a well place bunt
moved the runner into scoring position, then some good hitting by BB saw
2 runs score to even up. Kyle Moore finally got the opportunity to
show us at Newport how he deals with base runners by delivering a rocket
that landed right into the glove of The Sheriff above 2nd base and the
runner was out by a foot. It then came as no surprise there was no
further stealing for the remainder of the game. Bob Milne a Legend
and former catcher for the RAMS was still talking about the smooth
action and perfect throw from Kyle as he was being driven home hours
later.
For the bulk of the game it was very tight, every time
the RAMS scored again BB would do the same and for the most of the game
the RAMS were 1 or 2 up, but there was certainly never a time to take
the foot of the pedal. Scot threw well and the side played very
well defensively, including The Sheriff and Jordy once again combining
well for more than one great and well needed double play. In my
opinion the RAMS continued to hold the advantage through the game but
there was never a moment to lose focus as BB were certainly playing very
well. It was a good hard fought and strategic game of baseball
played by both teams.
Blacky didn't just put in defensively with two powerful
hits that either bounced once or hit the fence on the full at left for
stand up doubles, he really is seeing and driving the ball well this
year. So is Jordy Young who once again got 2 hits including a
double, The Sheriff was also smashing the ball but as is said; "baseball
can be a game of inches" and unfortunately a couple of his trademark
rocket line drives found Bonbeach gloves. Landy played a great
game at first and struggled early with the bat but dug deep as he always
seems to be able to do to finish the game with 2 hits in a row including
a stand up double that had someone in the crowd saying: "for a bloke as
tall and with such long legs he really can run quickly despite what it
may look like on the way," in other words Landy you can certainly get
their quickly, but perhaps not as gracefully as some, not that I would
dare say anything!!!! :-)
A good solid game continued through to the 7th which
included a fantastic diving slide with out stretched arm into home plate
by Jordy Young to safely avoid the tag that saw his face totally covered
and black, including a nice mouth full of dirt. A pitching change
was made by both teams to start the 8th, just prior to that Kyle took a
great pop fly that almost bought down rain and is certainly something
Angry could never hit in training. Kyle took is as txt book stuff
turning and standing totally still to take the out, I am sure that if he
didn't move from the catching position it would have hit him on the
helmet it was that straight up.
Craig Malt came in to throw in the bottom of the 8th with
the RAMS 2 runs up after Troy turned a walk into a run and The Sheriff
turned an infield ground ball and wild throw into a triple which the
size of the foul areas at BB allow. Craig always says he is not
there to blow batters away but as always was throwing strikes and with a
good field behind him 3 fly balls saw BB retired in thew bottom of the
8th. The RAMS kept the pressure on in the top of the 9th and
scored 2 more insurance runs with a great hit by Jono to right as well
as Landy's 2nd hit. The RAMS then took the field in the bottom of
the 9th hoping that 4 runs up would be enough. Craig walked the
1st 2 hitters which had us all on edge, he then struck the next hitter
out much to his own and RAMS fans amazement :-) (Craig had previously
made the statement that "if I can strike someone out at 39 years old in
Div 1, I will retire, " he even put his glove on the mound and was ready
to do so, but the job was not done. As high as Craig, the team and
supporters were after Malty's strikeout, it came crashing down with the
next hitter who didn't seem to get all of a hit to right but Jono just
kept going back and over the fence it went for a great 3 run bomb for BB
and the pressure was back on with only one run up, the bottom of the 9th
and only 1 out. Craig's experience and determination saw him get
the next hitter out when a deep hit to left resulted in great fly taken
by Blacky at such a crucial time. The supporters all held their
breath as he ran full stride and at full stretch to the foul line to
take a great catch. The next hitter grounded out through Troy and
the RAMS were home by one. Angry spoke firm but fair to the team after
the game talking about the importance of not missing an opportunity, no
matter how small, that everything and every pitch counts in Div 1 as the
game can change on that one pitch.
Angry said after the game: It was a great game
that had a bit of everything, good hitting, fielding and
good pressure and most importantly a win, take nothing away from
Bonbeach, they are a solid team and we did well to get the hits we did. Players learn more in a game won by 1 run than they
do in a game won by a large margin, we will continue to keep the
pressure on as we look towards Geelong next week"

Jordy showing that sliding well matters &
Angry debriefs the players after a narrow win
he doesn't like the taste of dirt
2nds def Bonbeach 8-0
(Match Report by Dean Anglin)
The
RAMS continued to show reinvigorated power
with the bat, posting 7 runs in the first innings to shut the Bluejays
out of the game early. Ryan Leitch stood atop of the hill again, and
although the zone was tough to find at times he again shut out the
opposition and did not give up a run. Defensively we were solid, only
one error of note for the game, without any damage on the scoreboard.
Leitchy was relieved by Griffin Weir for the second week running who
proceeded to shut down Bonbeach in the final two innings. Zac Seipolt
and Dean Anglin returned to the team this week and added to the strength
and depth of our young club.
The weather was good to
us, blue skies for most of the game, little bits of rain, but nothing to
worry us. The biggest factor in the game was the sandy turf under foot.
The Bonbeach ground which was only upgraded last season was very loose
and made moving around the bases and fielding difficult at times. Our
players handled the conditions well with discussions prior to the game
ensuring we were aware of the effects it would have.
This week we head into a tough one with Geelong, we have
always had great battles with the Baycats and this week is sure to be no
different. The Baycats will be keen to get some points on the board and
we are obviously gunning to start 3-0.

Newport v Cheltenham 8 October 2009
@ MBP
1sts def Cheltenham 13-1
(Match Report by Radio RAMS)
With a short break following the convincing win against Sunshine
the RAMS got things together and went to
the Melbourne Ball Park in Altona to take on Cheltenham. There was
a great feeling amongst the team given the achievements from the
Sunshine game, players had a good level of confidence and self belief as
well as confidence in other members of the team, all vital ingredients
to continue to succeed. Being the early game
"Play Ball" was called as the sun was setting and the
RAMS didn't waste any time getting off and
running scoring 9 runs in the top of the first dig with what was more
like a hitting display. The innings started with lead off Heath
Grundy getting on base after a ground ball to short resulted in a bad
throw, Scot Malt was up next and hit a strong ground ball up the middle,
Matt Lawman (The Sheriff) kept things moving with a thumping line drive
to left centre scoring Heath, what continued for the first innings was
like a blur of strong hits by all and aggressive base running.
Heath Grundy came to the plate for the 2nd time in the 1st with bases
loaded and belted a line drive to far left field, Heath got a stand up
double and scored 3 runs in the process.
Stevie Pengelly was given the job starting on the hill,
(Steve had just finished a very strong Winter season with Northcote
which included pitching the winning semi and grand final, so he
has certainly been on song) Steve started off well and
continued on to pitch a very strong game going the full distance being 7
digs. He not only pitched well he also had an exceptional game
fielding numerous ground balls making some very impressive plays
including combining with Landy for a number of perfectly executed
pitchers cover plays at 1st. With Steve only recently turning 18
he proved that he is going to continue be a force to be reckoned with
for the RAMS for a long time to come.
After a couple of runners got on early The Sheriff (shortstop) and Scot
Malt (2nd base) combined for a number of perfectly executed and exciting
double plays with the ever reliable rock, Landy at 1st to complete the
play. The entire game was not only a very strong game with the
bat, it was also a very strong defensive game.
Steve continued to hold The Rustlers scoreless while
the RAMS scored 3 more runs in the top of
the 6th with another innings of strong hitting by Jordy Young, Scot, The
Sheriff and Kyle More (who needs a nickname fast). Jordy
who was playing right field had a hard hit ball sent his way with
runners on late in the game, when the ball landed it practically turned
90 degrees after hitting a clump of dirt, this allowed the Rustlers to
get a run across the plate. Stevie didn't just impress from the
mound he also smashed the ball hard for a nice line drive to left centre
in the top of the 7th, with further hitting in the top 7th Troy Malt
scored after a walk with bases loaded and the RAMS
moved to 13 runs to 1. Troy had ended the previous inning with an
unassisted double play resulting from a ground ball hit to him at 3rd
with 1st and 2nd occupied, Troy simply touched 3rd and then threw the
runner out at first, the relaxed manner Troy made the play it looked as
though he could have done it sitting in an arm chair.
Stevie continued to throw strongly into the bottom of the
7th with the score at 13-1 throwing yet another strike-out. The
final play was a ground ball to the Sheriff at short, that he fielded
and threw faultlessly to end the game. The Sheriff is a true class
act and impressive to watch both in the field and with the bat where it
is as though he is seeing the ball like a watermelon. Landy took a
rocket groundball backhanded and handed it off to Steve for a very
impressive play, doesn't hurt that you have arms and legs longer than
some of our U12's are tall. Landy is a great asset to the
RAMS and plays with great passion for the
club he has grown up with. Some other impressive
performances were put in by Jeremy Young, who was the pinch runner for
both the pitcher and catcher which is part of the midweek 2 hour timed
games. Jezza is a quality player in his own right and is an
excellent base-runner, it seemed as though every time the
RAMS had someone was on base Jezza seemed
to be one of them. The RAMS finished
with 11 hits with 2 each to Jordy, Scot, The Sheriff and Kyle, all
others got a hit a piece.
Angry Said after the game: Stevie
threw an exceptional game, self and team confidence as well as self
belief continues to grow, however no one is getting ahead of themselves
as we know we have to continue to work hard as we are going to come up
against some quality teams. Finally just
to remind you of the BV prediction for the game being: "Newport
will be tested by Cheltenham at the stadium on Thursday."
(I totally agree with Angry that we are not to get ahead of ourselves
but I certainly wont be betting my house on Baseball Victoria
predictions!!!)

RAMS
SENIOR TEAMS START THE SEASON WITH A WIN
It was a beautiful day, the sun was shinning
and a great day to be doing anything outdoors, so after much pre-season
training, planning and recruiting, the day had come for
The Newport baseball Club to get down to
the business of playing baseball. As the saying goes; "I love the
smell of pine tar in the morning." A number of players had played
in various Winter Competitions in both senior and junior teams, whilst
other players followed other pursuits and others just took a Winter
break. So after a couple months of pre season training as well as
recruiting a talented catcher from the U.S., the
RAMS were ready to take the field. The first match-up for
the RAMS was to be a home game against long
time rivals and the other Division 1 Club in the Western Suburbs, The
Sunshine Eagles. The day would turn out to be a good day across
the board with all 4 senior teams coming away with a win.
1sts def Sunshine 16 - 1
(Match Report by Radio RAMS)
With a largely unchanged line-up from last year, but
certainly a lot more confidence and focussed training the guys were
raring to go. The guys were on the losing end of some close
finishes last season so were all keen to step up. Only 3 players had not played in the ones last year,
Jordan Young (promoted to the 1sts after a strong winter and pre
season), Dave Gregurke (after having a year off) and Kyle Moore (Catcher
from the U.S.) Sunshine had what can fairly be described as a
turbulent winter and lead up to the season with player movement and
coaching changes with their recruited coach yet to arrive from U.S.
commitments.
Recently inducted Life Member Barbara Malthouse was given
the honor of throwing the first pitch which of course umpire Peter
Eckardt politely called a "STRIKE." Barbara then handed the ball
to her Grandson Scot who was given the job on the mound to start the
first game for the RAMS. Scot was on
the money as soon as Ecky called "PLAY BALL" striking
the first batter out. Scot threw extremely well for 5 innings with 7
strike outs and not allowing any runners on base. Scot was well
backed up by a great field with some impressive plays by all members of
the team. Matt Lawman, Troy Malthouse, Landy & Gurkas
all made some great plays with Lawman defying gravity in one short
ground ball he scooped running in from shortstop. Jordan Young showed he has earned the opportunity
to play in the ones by
making some great plays at 2nd base as well as getting 3 hits for the
day. With Scot starting the game as he did and the
RAMS blasting 9 runs in the 1st dig, the
game seemed to be over quite early. Full respect to an
under-manned Sunshine who are in a rebuilding phase, however the
RAMS did not let up, Lawman smashed 2 of 3
hits to hit the fence on one bounce. Kyle Moore lived up to
expectations catching well and controlling the field as well as showing
he can certainly hit the middle of the ball. Gurkas hit the ball
hard to right centre for a triple before an injury took him out of the
line- up, look forward to seeing him back given his pre-season form as
well as early game play. It was a RAMS team very focussed on
making good contact with the ball with other good hitting by Blacky (who
bats like he hates the ball), Jono hit the ball hard as did Heath
Grundy, Troy, Landy and even Angry hit a nice line drive after having to
come in for one dig after Gurka's injury.
The wiley 'not so old' left hander Craig Malthouse came
in to relieve Scot in the 6th and threw well giving up a run on a sac
fly. Craig will be a very handy asset to the
RAMS coming in throwing when needed and its great to have him
back at the club as he brings a lot more than just his baseball
skills..... Over a cold drink after the game Craig was asked why
he didn't strike anyone out by RAMS
veterans Titchy Mildenhall and Humphrey Armstrong, Craig said "it will
be a long time coming as I am there to do a specific job when needed"
(or words to that effect......) Overall a great team performance
across the board both in the field and with the bat.
Angry said after the game; "Our defence
was a real strong point and we were good with the bat, something we
needed to improve on from last season and have worked hard at, it is a
long season with 32 more games to go, but we have certainly started the
best way we can. I am very happy with Kyle Moore, not just for his
playing abilities but also the way he has fit in with the team on and
off the field, I look forward to seeing him on the mound as well as
behind the plate."
2nds def Sunshine 8 - 1
(Match Report by Josh Meddings)
The season
is definitely upon us, and as we find out with every first game of the
year there is some cobwebs that need ironing out. We started off well
scoring 2 runs in the first dig thanks to some errant pitching by
Sunshine but also a few good hits, Stephen Pengelly did his usual steady
performance with the bat as did Jonothan Bramwell who due to work
commitments has started the season off in the 2's which is a very handy
pick up for us, the left handed right fielder showed he hasn't lost any
with the bat, hitting a nice line drive double. Once again Ryan Leitch
was given mound duties and he didn't disappoint shutting down Sunshine's
bat's early on, then young Griffen Weir finished off Ryan's good early
work by blowing some pitches past them late in the game to secure us a
handy 8-1 win. Sunshine I have to say were a bit under manned, and I
think as a team we need to work on our hitting for when we come up
against some teams that have a bit more experience. But overall a good
start for the 2nd's which I hope continues a winning culture this
season.
3rds def Sunshine 16 - 1
(Match Report by Mark Jowett)
The 3rds at Newport has always been focussed as a
development side for emerging talent with the club and this year was no
different. With the experience of Mark Jowett at the helm assisted
by newly appointed Team Manager Kelvin Saunders a long time
RAM who is great to see back around the
club. The RAMS had a good solid start
to the season from what is predominantly a young line up of talented
players.
Cable Savage took the ball onto the hill for opening
honors and clearly showed he is going to be on the move up this season
with great control. Cable threw 5 innings with 7 strikeouts and
gave up only 4 hits. The RAMS defence
was impressive with only one error and some great plays made by all.
Once again the focus on quality at bats and making contact in the
batting box was evident with Tyson Foreman, Jowie, Sam Aldenhoven,
Stotty and Ayden Ham all getting two hits a piece, whilst Harley
Camilleri and Sean Pengelly both played well and chipped in with RBI's.
Jezza took the ball from Cable and kept the Shiners quiet and had a
couple of people asking "who is that young kid, he throws some heat
at his age." Jezza is a quality player who threw well with 3
strikeouts in 2 digs and gave away no hits or walks, he also did well in
the batting box.
Kelvin (aka The Captain) said he was "very impressed
by a very committed group of young guys as well as some more experienced
players. It was a very solid performance by the whole team who all
contributed well for a great result and great start to the season."
4ths def Sunshine 16 - 8
(Match Report by Trent Curwood)
Newport Rams fourths returned for another year starting off against the Sunshine
Eagles. It came as no surprise, especially after a difficult and arduous
preseason, the fourths starting line-up was indeed heavier and older
that last years squad.
The only junior in
our team, Adam Dornom, started on the mound and threw three great
innings letting in one run. With the Eagles pitchers struggling to
find the zone and some good team hitting the RAMS were up by 9 runs early.
Enter “Bone Cruncher” Boucher, our stand out pitcher and MVP from last
year. Well let’s just say six months vacation from the mound
showed and after the Eagles stringing some hits together and the
RAMS refusing to
get outs for Bruce we entered the last innings 3 runs up. After some
great team batting we scored 5 runs to win 16-8.
Notable mentions to
the evergreen’s, Peter Cassell and Sam Galafaro for some great hitting.
On a sad note our
win could have been bigger if not for Ben Portelli Jnr being tragically
(OK hilariously) thrown out at third base. With base running being one
of the many strengths Ben brings to the fourths his David Campese goose
step was an innovative (and funny), yet unsuccessful way of trying to
avoid being tagged.
Next week Bonbeach,
we are now advertising for the position of pitcher, all reasonable
offers accepted.

RAMS play Malvern in a
Practice Match on 27/09/09
On Sunday 27/9/09 with no evident AFL Grand Final
hangovers the RAMS had a valuable practice
hit-out with Malvern at the RAM-DOME.
Despite a rain soaked ground (that had Jowie promoted to sponge
duties) It was an ordinary day to be outside, let alone playing a
tune up game a week before the season opener, but it was 'GAME ON'
regardless.
A decision was made by Angry and Macca (Malvern's
Coach, Mark McKenna) to play '30 pitch innings' so pitchers would
get a throw in and the weather would not impact to much on the play so
both teams could gain maximum valuable match practice from the outing.
Scot Malthouse started on the mound for the
RAMS and threw very well with Kyle Moore
taking on a new game role as plate umpire. Stotty was taking
advantage of the great food being served in our kitchen, before taking
the plate umpire's position ready for the 3rd batter of the 1st dig,
(even with a mask after it was recommended) Needless to say
the fist Malvern hitter was a strike out with Kyle calling...
Although I must say he was spot on as I had taken refuge from the
weather in the scorer's box and Scoty was on the money throwing well.
Without going into the nuts and bolts of the game to
much, there was some great efforts put in by both teams on the field and
in the batters box. As I said Scot Malthouse threw well, as did
Griffin Weir who seems to grow a foot taller every time I see him and is
really maturing well as a thinking pitcher and baseball mind, I even saw
Jezza Young on the mound throwing some heat to Scot Malthouse as Kyle
was having a run at 2nd.
Some great plays were made in the field, Troy (the
transformer) Malthouse made some plays from third with the ever
reliable 'rock', Landy at 1st picking up anything thrown remotely in his
direction. Blacky started at right field and even with his hoody
and a full thermal suit under his uniform was still cold (harden up
Blacky) despite this he took a couple of great fly balls and
contributed well with good contact hitting. Sam Aldenhoven came in
to play 3rd and made some great plays, Sam also did well with the bat
thumping one to left centre and as we all know with Sam once you get his
running momentum going it is a bit hard to pull up, Sam hit 2nd base as
the ball was being picked up and got a rush of blood and went for third
only to be thrown out. Bad luck Sam but take nothing away from a
thumping hit.
It is also great to see some of our younger
RAMS, such as Jezza, Tyson, Harley among
others being given a taste of things to come for them. Tyson also
had some great quality at bats with a good line drive to first (Sam
Foreman looked on wearing every piece of winter clothing she had as well
as a blanket and sleeping bag, we all know SAM loves the cold)
Quality at bats is something the RAMS
lacked last year costing us some close results, but has been a big focus
of pre season.
Angry said after the game: It was a good
hit-out in trying conditions which is not a bad thing to hone some
skills. Malvern is a quality outfit and to have to opportunity to
match up with them in a practice match is good preparation for us.
Was good to see some of the younger blokes such as Tyson, Jordy, Jezza
not taking a backward step facing some Div 1 pitchers. We will see
lots from them in years to come, and not that far away. I was very
happy with our hitters focussing on quality at bats and really working
at put bat on ball which is something we have worked hard at.
THANKS TO MALVERN FOR A GREAT
HIT-OUT REGARDLESS OF THE CONDITIONS, I AM SURE THEY BENEFITED FROM THE
MATCH PRACTICE AS MUCH AS WE DID. ON BEHALF OF THE RAMS WE WISH
THEM A GOOD SEASON AHEAD,
EXCEPT WHEN YOU PLAY US OF COURSE....
:-)
NOW ITS GAME ON WITH THE SEASON
STARTER THIS WEEK ON 4/10/09

RAMS PLAY WERRIBEE IN PRACTICE
MATCH
on 20/09/09
On Sunday the 20th of September 2009,
the RAMS
played the Werribee Giants in a practice match, the game proved to be an
opportunity for both clubs to utilise a full bench of seniors and
budding seniors for some valuable match practice. One of the
things both the Newport players and
supporters alike were keen to see was how Kyle Moore (our catcher
from the U.S. who is with us for 2009/10 season) would go.
Kyle certainly didn't disappoint as when he came up to bat in the bottom
of the 1st dig he got all of the fast ball sent his way and dispatched
it over the left field fence. I recall someone saying "well
that certainly covers the air-fare", but on a serious note given
that Kyle has not played for 3 months as his season finished in May and
having just arrived Thursday, he put in a good solid game and is
certainly going to add some great stability for the
RAMS behind the plate with some very
impressive skills.
Bob Milne (who was so eager for the season to start, rang up Saturday
wanting to know why his ride was late picking him up, then remembered he
was 24hrs early) Bob, a catcher himself in his day was on hand and
was very impressed by Kyle's skills as well as that of the rest of the
RAMS.
Darren Malthouse made good use of the large number of players he
wanted to put through their paces changing pitchers every 2 innings
spreading the workload as well as giving all pitchers a run on the
mound. It is great to see Craig Malthouse back at
Newport after starting at the club at 8
years old, there were a few concerns that Craig might pull a hamstring
as he jogged b/w innings or as he picked up his glove. But Craig
showed he can still hurl the ball from the mound with more pitching
actions than the great Al Condie. Another of the more mature
players for the RAMS, Jowie was playing 1st
base after Landy took a seat, Jowie took a great line drive catch
backhanded and a sigh of relief was felt as no injury was sustained,
then everyone realised he had Landy's glove on which has a magnet in it,
not that Landy needs it.
Overall a great performance was put in by the RAMS
players both young and not as young. Jordy Young played
very well at shortstop making some great plays as did Gurkas who did
well with the bat as well as taking a great diving catch right at the
base of the mound after running from 3rd, who ever said pitchers
shouldn't take fly balls... It would be impossible to go through
all the players but it was certainly a solid performance given the
amount of changes made as the game progressed. Harley Camilleri
went from sitting on the bench to being told he was next at bat, one
pitch later he was in and the game had to pause whilst he put his
uniform top on and belt up, Harley has been a big improver over the
winter and this will no doubt continue into summer. Griffin Weir,
Cable Savage and Stevie Pengelly all threw well. A number of
players were missing after a full winter season so there is plenty more
depth and talent yet to return.
Werribee also played a great game with some great pitching and some very
impressive hitting. Apologies for not knowing the names of the
players but I heard one hit that got absolutely all of the ball and was
sent clear over the fence at left. Werribee are certainly are a
class outfit with a lot of up and coming young players also providing
great depth that I am sure will see them have a good season ahead.
Darren Malthouse said after the game "it was great from our
point of view to be able to get some valuable match practice and throw
so many guys in different positions, I look forward to the season with
only 2 weeks to go. They are a great bunch of blokes at Werribee so it
was good to have a pre-season match with them" |
